Annotate Comment Styles do not Persist on User Submissions

Annotate Comment Styles do not Persist on User Submissions

Description

When using the Annotate tool to add comments to student submissions, formatting applied to comment text, such as text color and background highlighting, is not preserved after the submission is reopened. The styling appears correctly immediately after the comment is saved, but once the grader leaves the submission and returns later, the comment remains visible while all custom formatting is lost.

Steps to Replicate

  1. Log in to Blackboard Learn as an administrator

  2. Navigate to System Admin > Courses > Create an Ultra Course

  3. Create an assignment and make it available to students

  4. Enter Student Preview and submit a DOCX or PDF file containing text

  5. Exit Student Preview

  6. Navigate to Gradebook > Gradable Items and open the assignment submission

  7. Open the submitted file in the Annotate viewer

  8. Highlight text and select the Comment tool

  9. Create a multi-line comment

  10. Apply a custom text color to the first line of the comment

  11. Apply a custom background highlight color to the second line of the comment

  12. Leave the third line unformatted

  13. Save the comment

  14. Verify that the formatting is displayed correctly

  15. Leave the submission page

  16. Reopen the same submission and access the saved comment

Observed Behavior:

The comment remains visible, but the text color and background highlighting are no longer displayed after reopening the submission.

Expected Behavior:

The comment retains all applied text colors and background highlighting after the submission is reopened.
