NVDA Announces Background Page Content Before Bb Adopt Guide Modal in Ultra

In Ultra view mode, when a Bb Adopt Guide modal is launched in an Ultra course, NVDA screen reader announces the underlying page content before reading the guide modal.

Description

In Ultra view mode, when a Bb Adopt Guide modal is launched in an Ultra course, NVDA screen reader announces the underlying page content before reading the guide modal. The modal is not immediately identified as a dialog, causing users to remain unaware that the context has changed and requiring them to listen through unrelated page content before reaching the guide.

Steps to Replicate

Prerequisites:

  1. Blackboard Learn Ultra environment with Bb Adopt enabled.

  2. NVDA Screen Reader is installed and running.

Replication Steps:

  1. Log into Blackboard Learn as an administrator

  2. Create and access an Ultra course > Copy the course home page URL

  3. Log in to Pendo Adopt to create a new guide

  4. Navigate to Guides > Select Create Guide > Set the guide visibility to Public

  5. Choose a default layout

  6. Select Manage in my app

  7. Enter the course URL copied in step 2

  8. Launch the Visual Design Studio

  9. Verify that "Only on this page" is selected under the Location tab

  10. Design and save the guide

  11. Start NVDA Screen Reader

  12. Access the Ultra course created in step 2 and use Student Preview

  13. Allow the Bb Adopt Guide to launch automatically

Observed Behavior:

NVDA announces background page content, including banner landmarks, page headers, course navigation, and content items. Only after completing the announcement of the underlying page does NVDA begin reading the guide modal content. No dialog announcement or context change notification is provided when the modal opens.

Expected Behavior:

When the Bb Adopt Guide modal opens, focus should move directly to the modal and NVDA should immediately announce the dialog and its content. Background page content should not be announced while the modal is active.
