MathJax $$ Rendering Backward Compatibility Issues in Reused Ultra Course Content

A change in MathJax $$ rendering causes backward compatibility issues in reused Ultra course content.

Description

A change in how $$...$$ LaTeX syntax is interpreted from inline to display format affects previously created Ultra course content when it is reused in courses with the MathJax feature enabled. As a result, formulas render differently, causing instructors to believe the reused content is broken.

Steps to Replicate

Prerequisites:
In Administrator Panel > Tools and Utilities: Tools, enable MathJax for LaTeX (Ultra Only) tool for courses only.

  1. Log into Blackboard Learn as an Instructor

  2. Open an organization

  3. Create a new document

  4. Add a content containing the following text:

  • Tekst $$\frac{1}{2}$$ tekst

  • Tekst \(\frac{1}{2}\) tekst

  • text $$1/2$$ test

  1. Save the document

  2. Observe that the formulas are displayed as follows:

  • Tekst 1/2 tekst (rendered as a fraction)

  • Tekst \(\frac{1}{2}\) tekst (not rendered)

  • text 1/2 test

  1. Open an Ultra course

  2. Create a new document

  3. Add the same content used in Step 4

  4. Observe that the formulas are displayed as follows:

  • Tekst
    1/2 (rendered as a fraction)
    tekst

  • Tekst 1/2 tekst (rendered as a fraction)

  • text
    1/2
    test

  1. Close the document.

  2. From the Course Content page, click on the ellipsis menu (...) and select Copy Items > Organisations > [Organisation opened in Step 2] > Contents > [Document created in Step 3]

  3. Click Start Copy

  4. Open the copied Document

Observed Behavior:
The copied document displays formulas using the same formatting and rendering behavior observed in Step 10 (Course document behavior).

Expected Behavior:
The copied document should retain the original formatting and rendering behavior observed in Step 6 (Organization document behavior).
