Hyphen Character Unrecognized Causing Issue With URL Retrieval

When a hyphen is included in the name of a document it causes issues when a URL is generated to refer to the document.

Description

A Word document was created with a special hyphen character in the file name. When clicking the filename, the web browser is unable to convert this hyphen while generating the URL. Instead of the hyphen, the browser is placing a "?" in the URL. This is throwing an error while trying to access the resource.

Steps to Replicate

  1. Log into Blackboard as Admin

  2. Create test Course (System Admin > Courses)

  3. Create a test Student (System Admin > Users)

  4. Navigate to test Course and quick enroll as Instructor

  5. Create Content - Course Message

  6. As Student, Upload a docx file with an "-" in the filename

  7. Attempt to download the file by clicking the hyperlink

Expected Behavior:
URL is converted, file is downloaded
Observed Behavior:
URL converts "-" to a "?" and throws an error

Resolution / Workaround

  1. Click on the Filename

  2. In the address bar of your browser, replace the ? where the hyphen should be with : %E2%80%93

  3. Resource is then accessible
