Incorrect Average Time Spent Value in Question Analysis Report

Question Analysis report calculates average time spent using enrolled users instead of submitted attempts.

Description

In Ultra Course View, the Question Analysis report displays an incorrect average time spent value.

The report calculates the average based on the total number of enrolled students in the course rather than the number of students who submitted an assessment attempt.

As a result, the reported average completion time is lower than expected and does not align with the documented behavior, which defines this metric as the average completion time across all submitted attempts.

Steps to Replicate

  1. Log in to Blackboard Learn as an Instructor

  2. Open an Ultra course

  3. Enrol 5 students in the course

  4. Create and publish a test

  5. Have 3 students complete the test with the following attempt durations:
    - Student 1: 2 minutes 17 seconds (137 seconds)
    - Student 2: 2 minutes 14 seconds (134 seconds)
    - Student 3: 6 minutes 34 seconds (394 seconds)

  6. As the instructor, navigate to Analytics > Question Analysis and run the report.

  7. Compare the displayed Average time spent value with the expected average calculated using only completed attempts

Observed Behavior:
The Average time spent value is calculated using the total number of enrolled students rather than the completed attempts.

Calculation using enrolled students:
665 seconds ÷ 5 enrolled students = 133 seconds

Displayed Average time spent: 0:02:13

Expected Behavior:
The Average time spent should be calculated using only completed attempts.

Calculation:
Attempt 1: 137 seconds
Attempt 2: 134 seconds
Attempt 3: 394 seconds

Total completion time:
137 + 134 + 394 = 665 seconds

Average based on completed attempts:
665 ÷ 3 = 221.67 seconds

Expected Average time spent: 0:03:42
