Port and SSL/TLS settings for Customer E-Mail Relays are Ignored

Port and SSL/TLS settings for Customer E-Mail Relays are Ignored.

Description

Port and SSL/TLS settings for Customer E-Mail Relays are Ignored.

Steps to Replicate

  1. Login to Blackboard Learn as administrator

  2. Go to the administrator email configuration area for outgoing email or SMTP relay settings.

  3. Select the option to use a custom Customer E-Mail Relay or custom SMTP relay

  4. Enter a custom SMTP hostname for the relay

  5. Enter a non-default SMTP port, for example the port required by the customer relay instead of port 25

  6. Select an SSL/TLS option, such as STARTTLS or SSL/TLS, based on the customer relay requirement

  7. Enter the SMTP username and password if authentication fields are available

  8. Save the email relay configuration.

  9. Trigger an outgoing email from Blackboard Learn, such as a test notification, course message, or system email

  10. Review the mail connection behavior or mail logs.

  11. Confirm the issue reproduces if Blackboard Learn attempts to connect using port 25 without TLS instead of the configured port and SSL/TLS settings.

Observed Behavior:

The configured SMTP port and StartTLS settings do not take effect during email delivery. Blackboard Learn attempts to connect using the default SMTP port, 25, instead of the configured port, 587, which prevents successful email delivery through the configured SMTP server.

Expected Behavior:

Blackboard Learn should use the configured Custom SMTP settings when sending email, including:
- SMTP host: smtp.office365.com
- SMTP port: 587
- Connection type: StartTLS

-The configured SMTP credentials
Email delivery should complete successfully through the configured Microsoft 365 / Office 365 SMTP server.
