Messages Sent to Large Recipient Lists May Not Reach All Recipients When an Invalid Email Address Causes Processing Errors

When an email is sent to a large number of recipients, processing may stop if an invalid email address causes an exception. As a result, recipients in subsequent batches may not receive the message.

Description

When an email is sent to a large number of recipients, processing may stop if an invalid email address causes an exception. As a result, recipients in subsequent batches may not receive the message.

Steps to Replicate

  1. Log into Blackboard Learn as an administrator

  2. Create a Course or Organization

  3. Enroll a large number of users into the Course or Organization

  4. Ensure that most users have valid email addresses, but include one or more users with invalid email addresses near the beginning of the recipient list (alphabetically)

  5. Send an Email or Announcement to all enrolled users

  6. Verify message delivery for users with valid email addresses

Observed Behavior:

If Learn encounters an exception while processing an invalid email address, recipients in subsequent batches may not receive the message. The sender may also see a warning similar to: "Some or all recipients may not receive the message."

Expected Behavior:

All recipients with valid email addresses should receive the message, even if one or more recipients have invalid email addresses. Processing errors for individual recipients should not prevent delivery to remaining recipients.
