Changing Grades That Contribute in the Maximum /Minimum Column Calculation may Lead to Incorrect Values

Columns with a Maximum/Minimum calculation may exhibit inaccurate values if a change is made in another column, which affects the first column calculation. This behavior is not consistently reproducible.

Description

Columns with a Maximum/Minimum calculation may exhibit inaccurate values if a change is made in another column, which affects the first column calculation. This behavior is not consistently reproducible.

Steps to Replicate

  1. Login to Blackboard Learn as an administrator

  2. Create an Original Course and enroll a student in it

  3. Go to Grade Center >Full Grade Center > Manage > Grading periods

  4. Select Create Grading period, write a name, for example “Max_Grading_Period”, and Submit

  5. Back in the Full Grade Center select Create Column

  6. Write a name, like “Column 1” and set the parameters as:

    • Grading Period: “Max_Grading_Period”

    • Points possible: 100

    • The other parameters can be left as they are,

    • Submit

  7. Create a second Column and select a name, for example “column 2” and set the parameters as:

    • Grading Period: “Max_Grading_Period”

    • Points possible: 100

    • Calculate as running Total: No

    • The other parameters can be left as they are

    • Submit

  8. Back in the Full Grade Center, go to 'Create Calculated Column' > Minimum / Maximum Column, select a name, for example "'Maximum_Column" and set the parameters as:

    • Calculation Type: Maximum

    • Include in Minimum/Maximum: All Grade Columns in Grading Period > Max_Grading_Period

    • Calculate as Running Total: No

    • Submit

Observed Behavior: The column "Maximum_Column" has a score of 0 because the student has no attempts in columns 'COLUMN_1' and 'COLUMN_2'. The setting 'Calculate as Running Total' which is set to 'No' and that's why the current grade is 0

  1. In the Full Grade Center, click under 'COLUMN_1' to manually input a score of 100 for the student

  2. In the Full Grade Center, click under 'COLUMN_2' to manually input a score of 60 for the student

Observed Behavior: The "Maximum Column" has a score of 100, the maximum between columns 1 and 2

  1. Under "COLUMN_2", next to the grade, click on the chevron and select 'View Grade Details'

  2. Click on clear attempt and confirm it in the warning pop-up window. Once the attempt is clear go back to the Full Grade Center

Observed Behavior:
The 'Maximum Column' value is 0 and sometimes it gets cleared, so it shows no value at all.
Expected Behavior:
The 'Maximum Column' value should be 100 since "COLUMN_1" is still 100.
Note: The behavior is not reproducible every time, sometimes these steps need to be done a couple times before seeing the error.
