This article explains the support services Blackboard provides for Blackboard Teaching & Learning products (SaaS and Self-Hosted). It covers which products are supported, what Blackboard Support helps with, how to contact Support, severity levels and target response times, how to report an issue, the differences between Full Support and Extended Support, database schema rules, and what is not covered by support.
Important: All support services are subject to the terms and conditions of your institution's software license agreement or support services agreement with Blackboard. If your contract differs from this article, your contract applies. Blackboard may update this policy; changes take effect five (5) days after the updated version is posted.

What are the Blackboard support categories?
Every Blackboard product version is assigned a support category. The category defines the level of support your institution receives. Blackboard may change a product's category based on the product roadmap.
Full Support: Product versions in Full Support receive a wide range of support options and scheduled and necessary updates, such as product fixes and security fixes. SaaS Deployments for Blackboard LMS receive frequent updates and are covered under Full Support.
Extended Support: Blackboard LMS versions in Extended Support receive some of the same support options as Full Support, with several exceptions. See "What is the difference between Full Support and Extended Support?" below.
No Longer Supported: Blackboard LMS versions in this status are not maintained by Blackboard and no longer receive maintenance updates or scheduled updates. Only self-service support is available, through the knowledge base or Blackboard Help (help.blackboard.com). Blackboard strongly encourages customers to upgrade to a version with Full Support or Extended Support.
Can I open a case for a Blackboard LMS version that is No Longer Supported?
Issues reported by phone or through support.blackboard.com for a No Longer Supported version of Blackboard LMS will not be worked and will be closed. The only exceptions are for Managed Hosting customers, who can still:
Report a service outage
Request the restoration of deleted content
Schedule an upgrade
Any other request for a No Longer Supported version is reviewed and actioned at the sole discretion of Blackboard management.
What does Blackboard Support help with?
Blackboard Customer Support responds to and works to resolve problems submitted by customers and channel partners that are directly related to administering and operating Blackboard Teaching & Learning products. Support makes reasonable efforts to respond to all requests and to fix documented, reproducible errors and defects that are submitted through an approved channel.
Blackboard Support will:
Address issues where the product is not functioning or performing as designed
Offer product guidance for questions not covered in product documentation (this is not product training)
Offer product guidance on system configuration and administrative settings
Address concerns about core product functionality
If Support determines that a problem is caused by improper or incorrect use of the software, the problem may not qualify for support and may require Blackboard Professional Consulting Services.
How do I get help from Blackboard Support?
Self-service resources
support.blackboard.com: submit and add notes to cases, and access documentation, release notes, and knowledge articles. Available in multiple languages.
Blackboard Help (help.blackboard.com): product documentation and release notes. Available in multiple languages.
Blackboard Status (status.blackboard.com): current service status.
Support hours
24/7/365 support: Core support, including telephone support, is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Find support phone numbers on support.blackboard.com.
Business-hours support only: Live support is available 8 AM to 5 PM Eastern Time (ET), Monday through Friday, for these products: Blackboard Accreditation, Blackboard Program Review, Blackboard Planning, Blackboard Outcomes (Institutional Effectiveness), Blackboard Milestone, Blackboard Evaluate, Blackboard Course Evaluations, and Blackboard Portfolio.
What languages is Blackboard Support available in?
Blackboard Support is provided in English. Support in other languages may be available from time to time, depending on the language skills of available technical staff. You can ask to be assigned a Technical Support Manager who speaks your language, and Blackboard will try to provide this where possible. Finding a resource in your language may cause delays, so you can choose a faster response in English instead.
Who can contact Blackboard Support for my institution?
Designated support contacts
Your institution can designate up to two (2) people to receive support at any one time. You can change your designated contacts by giving Blackboard written notice. Designated contacts should have access to the Blackboard LMS administrator interface and have, or be able to easily get, SSH or VNC/Terminal Services access to the server where the product is installed.
Primary System Administrator
Blackboard requires each customer to have a Primary System Administrator. This person is the main administrative point of contact for Blackboard at your institution, and Blackboard Support contacts them with support-related questions. The Primary System Administrator is typically active in the support portal, submits cases as needed, knows your institution's Blackboard implementation and usage well, and can answer questions and make decisions about how the product is supported.
What can system administrators do?
All system administrators can submit cases, access knowledge articles and documentation, and edit contact information on support.blackboard.com. System administrators also have access to hotfixes, updates, and releases of supported products when they become generally available to licensed customers.
What are the Blackboard Support severity levels and target response times?
Blackboard Support assigns every support request one of four severity levels. Requests are handled based on severity, and the most severe cases have the fastest target response times. Blackboard Support may change a case's severity level so it matches the criteria below.
Severity level | What it means | Examples | Target initial response time |
Severity Level 1 | Your system is down and not functioning, disabled, or non-responsive. Applies to Production environments only. | No users can access the service. The service cannot communicate with external systems. | Within 1 hour |
Severity Level 2 | Your system is running, but major components are unavailable or unusable. | The service is unavailable to a subset of users or is intermittently unavailable. A major functional component is unavailable. | Within 4 hours |
Severity Level 3 | Your system is operating close to normal, but minor components are functioning abnormally. | Not specified | Within 1 business day |
Severity Level 4 | The software is operating normally, but you need instructional assistance. | Not specified | Within 1 business day |
Severity Level 1, 2, and 3 cases take priority over Severity Level 4 cases.
For Severity Level 1 and Severity Level 2 issues, Blackboard assigns resources to fix the error. If Blackboard needs access to your product, please provide access to your system and other software until the fix is complete.
Response time is measured from when your call or web request is recorded by Blackboard.
Service Level Agreement response times may vary. If in doubt, refer to your institution's contract.
What are the approved ways to submit a support request?
The only approved ways to submit a new support request are web-based self-service through support.blackboard.com and telephone. Blackboard Support is not responsible for responding to requests made by third parties, requests sent directly to individual Blackboard Support staff members, or requests sent by any other method.
How do I report an issue to Blackboard Support?
Fill out the case form completely. Blackboard may not be able to act on a case until all reasonably requested information is received. On the case form, select the severity level that fits your problem; Severity Level 1 and Severity Level 2 cases receive priority. You must also keep the account(s) Blackboard Support needs to access your site active.
What information should I include in my case?
A full description of the problem
A sample of output that shows the problem
Steps to reproduce the problem (ideally in a similar environment), and SSO login if needed
The results you expected
A copy of the input transaction that caused the problem
Any screenshots or video that will help with troubleshooting
What happens if Blackboard Support asks me for more information?
You have 14 days to provide the requested information.
Blackboard sends reminders after 3 days and after 7 days.
After 14 days with no response, the case is automatically set to Resolved and you are notified.
You then have 30 more days to reopen the case if needed.
What happens when my case is in Solution Suggested status?
You have 14 days to accept or decline the suggested solution.
Blackboard sends a reminder after 7 days.
After 14 days with no response, the case is automatically set to Resolved and you are notified.
You then have 30 more days to reopen the case if needed.
How do I escalate a Blackboard Support case?
Follow the Customer Support Escalation Procedures available on support.blackboard.com.
What support do Blackboard LMS SaaS customers receive?
Blackboard LMS SaaS customers receive Full Support. For release timing and product update details, see the Blackboard SaaS release schedule and release notes on Blackboard Help (help.blackboard.com).
Blackboard LMS Managed-Hosting deployments are no longer supported as of December 31, 2022.
Blackboard LMS Self-Hosting deployments are no longer supported as of December 31, 2023. See the Extended Support information below.
What is the difference between Full Support and Extended Support?
Blackboard LMS Self-Hosting deployments receive Extended Support. This table compares Full Support and Extended Support.

What access does Blackboard Support need for Self-Hosted Blackboard LMS?
How quickly Blackboard Support can resolve a Self-Hosted issue depends on getting enough access to your system. Support may ask for:
Login information for the Student or Designer/Faculty users who are experiencing the problem
Login information for a Blackboard LMS Administrator (non-hosted environments)
SSH or VNC/Terminal Services access to the Blackboard LMS server (non-hosted environments)
Can I use VPN or another alternative method of server access?
Blackboard Support staff must approve any alternative method of server access, such as VPN, in advance. Blackboard will make reasonable efforts to accommodate reasonable requests. However, when an alternative access method is used, the service level targets for initial response and status updates do not apply to that support request. In these cases, you may want to consider an on-site, separately priced professional services engagement.
Does Blackboard support Self-Hosted products in an unsupported configuration?
No. If you report a problem on an unsupported configuration, Blackboard may, at its sole discretion, try to reproduce the issue in-house on a supported configuration. If Blackboard reproduces the problem, it may handle the request through standard support procedures. If Blackboard cannot reproduce it, you will be referred to Blackboard Professional Services for a separately priced engagement, and Blackboard will recommend that you move to a supported configuration.
Can I use the Blackboard LMS database schema?
Yes, with limits. Blackboard LMS database schema documentation describes the tables and columns in the Blackboard LMS database, including data types and sizes, nullability, indexes, sequences, keys, and constraints, with extra commentary for key tables and columns.
Under your license terms, you can download the schema documentation to build read-only queries, design custom reports, and perform analysis and troubleshooting.
You can access the schema through the product's user interfaces and published public APIs.
You are not permitted to make changes to the schema.
In specific circumstances, Blackboard Support may provide and run scripts to resolve a situation. Any other change to the Blackboard LMS schema requires a Blackboard Consulting engagement. Contact your Account Executive to work with the Blackboard Consulting team.
What database schema help does Blackboard Support provide?
Blackboard LMS Support can help you access the schema documentation and understand which tables correspond to which Blackboard LMS features. Blackboard Support does not help with writing or interpreting queries and does not provide training on database concepts. The Blackboard developer community on Blackboard Community (community.blackboard.com) offers informal help.
What happens if my institution makes an unauthorized database change?
Blackboard cannot support unauthorized database changes. If Blackboard finds that your institution made one, you will be informed. Your options are:
Restore a backup of your system from before the change.
Engage Blackboard Consulting by contacting your Account Executive. Consulting typically has a 4-week scheduling lead time and requires a statement of work or consulting contract. Consulting will work with you to diagnose the issue and decide on the best course of action.
What is not covered by Blackboard Support?
Blackboard support services apply only when the product is installed locally at your site or hosted by Blackboard on your behalf. Support does not cover the requests listed below. For each item, the table shows the alternative options available.

Improper hardware configuration, including hardware not sized for your deployment
Hardware (server) problems
Server operating system problems
