Description
The element must contain both the text string and the label of the control (menu). The screen reader announces the list of menu items, including the unselected ones; however, it does not announce the complete sentence or the selected menu item(s). As a result, the screen reader reads only a partial text string without indicating that a menu item choice is available, and it fails to announce the selected value.
Steps to Replicate
Prerequisites:
Use NVDA screen reader
Log in to Blackboard Learn Ultra Experience as an Administrator
Open aLearn Ultra Test that contains:
One Matching question that pairs images (with alt text) to text
One Jumbled Sentence question, for example:
Ich habe [ ] Hund
Ich habe [ ] Katze
(The dropdown options are common German articles such as ein, eine, and einen.)
In the Matching question, move focus to the answer combo box and navigate through the available options.
NVDA announces the full prompt, including the image description, each time an option is navigated. This occurs because the combo box references anaria-described byattribute linked to the image description, ensuring proper context. In the Jumbled Sentence question, move focus to each dropdown and navigate through the options.
NVDA announces only the dropdown control and its menu items (for example, “menu button opens list”), but does not read the surrounding sentence, resulting in missing sentence context.
Observed Behavior:
Dropdown options are not announced properly.
Expected Behavior:
When focus moves into each dropdown within a Jumbled Sentence item, the screen reader should announce.
